Freshwater, Saltwater

Water holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The vast network of rivers, creeks, billabongs, lakes and coastal regions found across the country represent a rich source of food and culture for Indigenous Australians. Marine environments are places to hunt, fish and to have contact with non-Indigenous Australians. For this reason, water is central to dreaming stories and different forms of marine life are often used as family or clan totems.

Seaweed

This seaweed installation is designed to highlight the importance of the ocean, where plants are the foundation of the food chain and their health is critical for the maintenance of marine ecosystems. These are currently threatened by global warming, as well as by soil and fertiliser run off. The artists inspiration has been taken from the seaweed found walking along the beach, Stirling creates beautifully intricate prints from pressed seaweed while McDonlad cuts out discarded plastic bottles into seaweed shapes.
