Once Upon a Midnight Dreary

Gallery: Gallery Two
Dates: 26/08/2009 - 11/10/2009
ARTIST Jean-Maree Pool

Using bold colours, artist Jean-Maree Pool tells the story of vulnerability, oppression, corruption, war and death.
Once Upon a Midnight Dreary looks at the tension between the beauty and innocence of youth and it’s fleeting nature. Each work holds hidden meanings, as the artist has been influenced by the vanitas paintings executed by the Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th Century.
These symbols include butterflies, flowers and bubbles, representing the brevity of life, along with skulls and beetles indicative of out final demise and return to earth.
