Once Upon a Midnight Dreary

Once Upon a Midnight Dreary

Gallery: Gallery Two
Dates: 26/08/2009 - 11/10/2009
ARTIST Jean-Maree Pool

Using bold colours, artist Jean-Maree Pool tells the story of vulnerability, oppression, corruption, war and death.
Once Upon a Midnight Dreary looks at the tension between the beauty and innocence of youth and it’s fleeting nature. Each work holds hidden meanings, as the artist has been influenced by the vanitas paintings executed by the Dutch and Flemish artists of the 17th Century.
These symbols include butterflies, flowers and bubbles, representing the brevity of life, along with skulls and beetles indicative of out final demise and return to earth.

Gallery: The Vault
Dates: 26/08/2009 - 11/10/2009
ARTIST Sue-Chin Lascelles

Magic Garden is the most unlikely garden to grow in the city of Bundaberg. The installation draws inspiration from childhood memories of feeling small amongst an environment so overwhelming in size. Within the Magic Garden grows felt plants and trees spanning many species of which some are real and others invented.

Like a small child lost in an overgrown garden, the imagination of wonder and make-believe are enabled to come to life.

Dates: 27/01/2010 - 07/03/2010
ARTIST Judy Parrott | Touring exhibition by M&GSQ

Having spent several months on an Arts Fellowship in Antarctica, Brisbane photographer Judy Parrott’s exhibition of photographic works, audio, and found objects present a rare glimpse of life on Australian research stations.

Antarctica – A Place in the Wilderness is the product of an arts fellowship with the Australian Antarctic Division and six-week residency at Casey Station, one of three Australian bases. The exhibition covers life on the ship Aurora Australis whilst journeying south. It documents six weeks at Casey Station, including the work of the scientists and tradespeople, field trips, the day to day life of the station and the environment, and an Antarctic Christmas and New Year.

Here We Go | From Here to Here

Here We Go | From Here to Here

Gallery: Gallery Two
Dates: 27/01/2010 - 07/03/2010
ARTIST Paul Mumme

The work of Paul Mumme investigates the often futile, ironic and contradictory nature of human behaviour.  Heavily influenced by Surrealism, his works are often humorous takes on slightly more serious observations of relationships, society and culture.

Slapstick is probably more obvious in Mumme’s Photographic and Video works, where he, the suited protagonist, engages in actions that are either pointless, superfluous, contradictory in nature or just idiotic.
